Sludge produced during the treatment process is pumped to digestion tanks. These digestion tanks are completely sealed off to exclude air. The temperature of the tanks is kept at a steady warm temperature for about a couple weeks. This creates ideal conditions for the sludges to biologically decompose. Methane gas is formed as a by-product from this decomposition.
